Directions: Below are the ten words from Chapter 14. Each of the ten words is accompanied by three sentences that use a form of the word. Only one of these sentences uses the word correctly, the other two use it incorrectly. Read all three sentences. Then click the button to the left of the sentence that uses the word correctly.

You may change your answers as you see fit. When you are satisfied that all answers are correct, click the "Submit" button at the end of the exercise. You cannot resubmit the exercise after that point.

Lifelines

vitality

I cannot say with any vitality that I'll be home for Christmas.

The performance was lacking in vitality and did not draw the audience in.

We should drop this sentence because it's vital to our argument.

2.

viable

The review board looked at all three proposals, but found only one viable.

The hostess's viability put her guests at ease and they started to talk to each other.

Japanese cars are famous for their viability.

3.

vivacious

A string of bad news sapped my friend of her usual vivaciousness.

After a day of hard work, I was vivaciously hungry and could not wait for dinner.

Among my options for a major, engineering seems to be the most vivacious.

4.

mortal

She was my most mortal friend through our college years.

His long illness had made the author mortal and unable to write any longer.

Mortality rates go down when people have enough to eat and receive good health care.

5.

immortal

To me, it's immortal to stiff a waiter or waitress with a bill by walking out without paying.

In the immortal words of Yogi Berra, "it ain't over until it's over."

The immortals die early.

6.

animate

She spoke in such a low voice that I was unable to animate what she was saying.

The investigators used a computer-generated animation of the fire to show how it spread through the building.

He appeared lifeless and animated after his ordeal.

7.

vigor

Vigor is just another word for weakness.

In a letter to the editors, the author mounted a vigorous defense her book.

Because the rules were so vigorous, nobody could really live by them on a day-by-day basis.

8.

resuscitate

Lack of oxygen caused the climbers to resuscitate and then freeze to death.

The event ended with a stirring resuscitation of the national anthem.

Actresses like Katherine Hepburn or Marlene Dietrich were able to resuscitate their careers after they were declared "box-office poison."

9.

resurrection

Resurrection is rebirth in a different body.

One can resurrect something only if it's not completely dead yet.

The town planners resurrected a proposal that had been considered dead for almost a decade.

10.

reincarnation

Mummies are reincarnations of ancient kings and queens.

They reincarnated the remains of the princess on her family's estate.

Reincarnation is rebirth in a different body.
