Directions: Below are the ten words from Chapter 16. Each of the ten words is accompanied by three sentences that use a form of the word. Only one of these sentences uses the word correctly, the other two use it incorrectly. Read all three sentences. Then click the button to the left of the sentence that uses the word correctly.

You may change your answers as you see fit. When you are satisfied that all answers are correct, click the "Submit" button at the end of the exercise. You cannot resubmit the exercise after that point.

Body Language

A corporal sign is the logo of a corporation, like the Nike swoosh.

The effects of my dad's stroke were more corporal than mental.

brawny

This is a tough puzzle, and we need a really brawny person to solve it.

The Vikings were warriors famous for their brawn and ferocity.

More than once, the singer got in trouble for her brawniness.

emaciated

She was an emaciated woman and would not accept any limitations on her freedom.

Emaciation is usually a sign of too much fat or sugar in a diet.

People like to write "feed me" on posters of emaciated-looking models.

4.

physique

The actor's physique showed every emotion the character felt inside.

Running three times a week has done wonders for my husband's physique and stamina.

I admire his body more than his physique.

5.

psychosomatic

Psychosomatic therapies concentrate mainly on physical exercises.

I believe my headaches were psychosomatic because they stopped after I got a better job.

I must be psychosomatic because I picked the correct numbers three times in a row.

6.

cardiac

Cardiac problems are located in the lungs.

Cardiology is the art of reading cards to predict the future.

His cardiac problems appeared early in life, and by now, he has had three strokes.

7.

ocular

The ears are our ocular organs.

An ocular statement is enough—I don't need anything in writing.

Ocular inspection alone convinced the expert that the painting was a fake.

8.

auditory

The ears are our auditory organs.

The image is so bad, the auditory signals appear to be weak.

His auditory argument was more convincing than his pictures.

9.

respiratory

Respiratory problems can be located not only in the lungs, but also in the throat.

The sudden rain was a welcome respiration from the relentless heat.

Chicken Soup for the Soul is a respiratory book that became a best-seller.

10.

cerebral

Lincoln's Gettysburg Address is one of the most cerebral speeches ever made by a president.

We need someone more cerebral to solve this puzzle.

As opposed to chess, golf is a more cerebral game.
